[[Play|Introduction]] "This comes straight from the capital and pays a hefty sum. A member of the clergy has been kidnapped. Bishop Rafferty has been taken to the Ashenbark Forest, a two day trek from the nearby city of Coreston.
But be wary, Captain! We have received word that Rafferty is being held captive by a large encampment of ogres within these woods. You must save Bishop Rafferty and escort him safely back to the Monastery, deep within the bustling city.
This mission is best completed with a small party of two, meaning you may only choose one companion to join you. We do not want the citizens of Coreston to catch wind of what’s transpired, nor do we want the ogres to see us from a mile away. Now, this is your opportunity to ask any questions and gather as much information as you can before you venture out."
"Questions?"
[[About Bishop Rafferty]]
[[What About The Ogres]]
[[About The Ashenbark Forest]]
[[About Coreston]]
[[What’re We Sitting Around For?]]"Rafferty? Hmph. Typical clergy member. He feigns virtue and holiness to maintain his position of power. He’s as debaucherous as any of us, just behind closed doors. But, of course, he would never speak of it.
I’ll just say this: he thinks he’s better than everybody and that he should be treated like a king. And, well, you better treat him as such or the Church may be disappointed and we might not get paid."
[[Back to Brief|Ready]]"Ogres are snarling buffoons with the weight of three horses and the height of an elf on the shoulders of, say, another elf. As you know, never approach these creatures head-on unless you are particularly, well, ambitious. It's best to outsmart or avoid them at all costs.
I'm not sure what they’re planning on doing with Rafferty. Not sure if they know either. They were probably just attracted to his funny hat and shiny trinkets. Or maybe they're just hungry."
[[Back to Brief|Ready]]"Quite the history to that place. A dragon was slain there, or so the locals say. A catapult had torn through its wing and it landed in those woods. The dragon was angered, and, although unable to fly, was otherwise ready to fight. It was a catastrophe. Flames everywhere. More knights than I’ve ever seen, valiantly riding straight into the blaze. Few returned. The ogres fled, only to return a full year later, still unsettled and bewildered by that inferno. The woods were burnt to ash. But it regrew anew from a few resistant seeds and saplings, beautiful and lively once again. To this day, the ogres put ash on their face and worship their campfires to channel the Flame Gods' power, or as they call them, the Fi’ju."
[[Back to Brief|Ready]] "Coreston is an old city, with a monastery placed right in its center. It was once the jewel of our kingdom because of its central location, receiving constant renovation and imperial funding. As the empire spread towards the coast, the kingdom prioritized these coastal cities instead, at the behest of the Clergy, wishing to spread their word to distant nations across the sea. Now, Coreston maintains its large population, but the city has fallen apart. Thieves, beggars, and highwaymen have ran rampart. Civil unrest is at an all time high. They are upset with what the Church has done to their beloved city, forcing the King to leave them behind. They won’t be happy with the site of Rafferty or any Clergy member for that matter, that’s for sure."
[[Back to Brief|Ready]]"Right, well if you feel as if you've prepared enough, let’s see what companions we have available for you today. They are just on the other side of that door. Are you ready? Keep in mind the objectives of the mission when you make your decision."
[["Yes"]]You quietly enter a room with a desk and two intimidating fellows sat facing you.
The one on the left is a mountain of a man. He must be at least seven foot tall and is quite wide too. He has a large beard with his hair tied back and is tattooed from head to toe. He has two axes strapped to his back and a long spear sat against the wall. His eyes are closed, facing straightforward with his back upright. You conclude he must be meditating.
The individual on the right is a slender young woman with short black hair, spinning and tossing a long dagger in her hands. She is in a relaxed position, with one arm over her chair. You notice she also has been reading a book that she left open on the desk, with a pencil nearby. On a brief glance, it seems to contain sketches and descriptions of monsters. You see a quiver strapped to her back. She notices your quiet entrance and her brow raises slightly, though she continues spinning her dagger and reading her book.
[[Greet Them]](if: $displayGreetingText is 0)["Greetings, mercenaries."
They both stop what they’re doing and look at you.
"I have an important mission queued up, but, before I tell you the details, I’d like to know more about you." (set: $displayGreetingText to 1)
]Who would you like to speak to?
[[Address Left-Most Person]]
[[Address Right-Most Person]]The large man begins speaking. “Hello. They call me Karos. Call me what you’d like, though. I am your servant, your hound, your tool. I have sharpened blades and a toughened body to lend you. Nothing will so much as breathe on you without first being cut down. This is what I offer. What else could be needed?
. . .
I was raised in a barbarian tribe on the northern mountains. These lands are treacherous and unkind to those who do not face the challenge of life head on. In our tribe, weakness is culled at youth. When a child is old enough to walk, we set them alone in the cold night. They must survive through the night to be accepted back into the tribe. If they give up and return before the night is done, they will have no place to rest their head. Most die. The mothers do not like this tradition, but if they wish to eat, they need strong tribesmen, not wriggling babes. This is our way of life, hardship and strength."

[[Pick Karos For Your Mission]]
[[Back|Greet Them]]The slender woman begins speaking. “Greetings, Captain!"
She shakes your hand.
“Loren Feth, it’s a pleasure. As I’m sure it is for you." She winks. “Now, you would ask me to present myself to you, eh? You’d like some sort of show? A dance? A ballad? Wish I had brought my lute with me.
. . .
I jest, of course. Though, it would seem you’ve learned enough about me when you laid your eyes on me. You’ve functioning eyes, just as I. You saw my dagger. You saw my finesse with it. You saw my quiver. You can infer the bow. You saw my journal. You may even have seen that I was open to a page on ogres, if you’re particularly perceptive. And you may note that you haven’t even mentioned ogres.
That’s right. What else could this mission be about?"

[[Pick Loren Feth For Your Mission]]
[[Back|Greet Them]]"Primarily, my hardened mind and body. Secondarily, two broad axes, a long spear, four knives strapped to my legs, and a set of bolas, though I prefer to be up close. I don’t care much for burdensome heavy armor, but I have a set ready if needed."
[[Back|Address Left-Most Person]]"Life is a battle. I am built to fight it. It is all I know. When I left our tribe, there seemed to be no other work for me. I won't be a soldier and fight some pompous fool’s battles for him. I won't be a knight and uphold some arbitrary code. I fight to live - I always have. I need gold to live. So, I choose to fight for gold."
[[Back|Address Left-Most Person]]You sense Karos's strength, ferocity, and determination based on your conversation with him.
Are you sure you'd like to choose him to take along with you?
[[Decide On The Barbarian, Karos]]
[[Back|Address Left-Most Person]]"Well, my trusty long knife, I call her Negotiator, my bow and quiver, my lockpick, and I suppose my charming good looks and sensibility."
She smiles.
[[Back|Address Right-Most Person]]"What, you think I wanted to work in the mines all day? Bake bread? Rear children? Grow wheat? Sell swill to drunkards? Well, I tried those things. None of them took advantage of what I offer. None of them fulfilled my deep yearning for more. You could call it wanderlust, I guess. All of them tied me down. So, I became a merc. And, well, who doesn’t, at least occasionally, want to stick a knife in someone."
[[Back|Address Right-Most Person]]You sense Loren Feth's cunning, confidence, and subtlety based on your conversation with her.
Are you sure you'd like to choose her to take along with you?

She glances over, or perhaps more accurately, glances up, at Karos.
"Well then . . ."
She puts her dagger away, pushes her chair back, and stands up swiftly.
"Let's be off."

[[My Past]]
[[Their Past]]
[[Our Mission]]
[[Life]]All around, even below and above, you see eyes the size of your head. Instead of white, the irises are surrounded by a dark red. They are looking right at you, tracking you as you move. You can hear cries coming from behind them, or perhaps coming from the eyes themselves. The pupils of each seem to have depth. Rather than just appearing as flat black cirlces, you can see down them like a tunnel.
You try to push your way through the hundreds of red eyes, but they only move slightly, less than an inch, then rigidly move back into place. You can't get a solid grip on them. You try to work your way through them for what feels like forever. You go to scream out, but your voice is painfully trapped in your throat. In anger, you begin wildly flailing at the eyes, punching and kicking them. They are as hard as adult dragonscale and bloody your hands and feet. They come closer and closer until they claustrophobically constrict all movement. You attempt to scream again, instead feeling such intense pain in your throat that it wakes you.
You look around the interior of the carriage and gather your bearings. You realize it was just a dream. The carriage has stopped. It's morning. Your companion looks at you, prepared to venture off.
[[Exit Carriage|Wake Up In Ashenbark Forest]](if: $compan is 1)[You ask Karos to speak of himself.

He rips apart the chains around Rafferty's wrists but struggles with the chains attaching him to the wall.
The clanking of the chains alerts the guard ogre. You quickly attack the ogre, as to not let it alert the other outside. Karos takes out his long spear as you exchange blows with the massive ogre.
Karos approaches and thrusts his long spear into the back of the ogre's shoulder. It looks to be strained as it pulls the spear back out. It drops to its knees, closes its eyes, raises the necklace high above its head, and begins mumbling. This lasts for a few moments. Then, the ogre gets up and drops the necklace into the firepit. It slowly starts to melt, producing a foul, odor.
Both ogres move closer to the flame, standing directly above it. "Praise Fi'ju", they both exclaim and then close their eyes. They stand there for quite awhile, inhaling the toxic smoke.
Once the smoke quells some, one ogre slumpts back, its eyes to the sky and the chest of jewels in its lap, and the other begins dancing frantically and without balance.
. . .
It is not terribly long until the sat ogre begins sifting through the chest again.

"Good. I'll stay here, behind this wall. You're going to have to lead them out the camp. Good luck."
Karos bravely steps out into the open entrance of the ogre encampment. He yells out loudly to the ogres. Startling them, they both quickly grab their weapons and begin pursuing Karos. He throws his set of bolas at one them and they wrap around its feet, entangling it. He whines and grunts until the other ogre stops and turns around to help him out. Karos begins running away.
It takes a few moments to untangle the bolas and once they had, Karos had already made some good distance into the woods, leaving a path of broken branches and shaking leaves. The ogres charge head first into the woods, running right past you.

"I don't know how exactly you expect this to go, but I trust ya, Cap'n."
"Thank you, Loren. I'll stay here, behind this wall. You're going to have to lead them out the camp. Good luck."
"Here goes nothing."
Loren bravely steps out into the open entrance of the ogre encampent. She slowly and smoothly pulls out an arrow. She knocks it, aims with one eye closed, and lets it loose.
The sat ogre is startled and falls back to the ground as the chest of jewels it was sifting through is shot out of its hands. The ogres, with a look of confusion and violence, look around for the source of this disruption.
Loren lets loose three more arrow straight into the fire, clearly revealing her vantage point. Immediately after firing, she sprints back along the dirt path at a blazing speed.
The ogres, now snarling with rage, clap their hands together, letting loose huge booms, as they move toward their makeshift weapons. They both grab clubs and charge toward Loren.
Far out in the horizon, you see Loren stop, turn off the path and look behind herself, and then to the forest. She steps onto an angled rock and then leaps high into the trees. She lands on a thick branch, hanging off the trunk with one hand. She swings her body around and leaps deeper into the forest, as you see her begin to stride from one tree to the next. They look to their chest of jewelry, to their camps' walls, and to the campfire beside them. The ogres seem to ponder the perceived Fi'ju spirit's words. They look shaken.
"Trinkets, buildings, tools - all things you reaped from these woods. You weaken by thinking you can't find, take, or create it elsewhere."
One ogre slowly stands up, brings its' mug right up to (if: $compan is 1)[Karos](else:)[Loren] and lets loose a bestial, dripping roar.

You're just about to turn the corner of the hut when you feel a hard tug on your ankle. You trip and hit your head on the hard dirt.
"Got you, sneaker!" You feel your head rush downward as you get pulled up high by you leg. An ogre lazily swings you about and you can only see brief blurs of your surroundings.
You hear a barbaric yawp roar out from Karos's bellows as the ogre holding you falls to his knees. Karos had jumped directly on the ogre, releasing its grip on you, and is now grappling with it from behind. You clumsily roll over onto your backside, looking up at the entanglement.
Karos reaches to his back, grabbing his longspear. The ogre is smacking Karos wildly on his sides. Karos lets loose a beastial roar and drives his spear deep into the ogre's abdomen.
The shocked ogre slumps over and starts falling in your direction. You deftly roll to your side as the ogre lands narrowly beside you, bouncing you lightly off the ground.
You stand up and draw your blade as you notice Karos being held by his throat by the other ogre. He draws a short blade from his leg holster and lands it deep in the ogre's torso. He has a patchy, ragged gray beard and matted hair coming out the sides of his cap. He is dilapidated in the corner of a narrow, swaying cage, whimpering. There are some sacks and librams strewn about, alongside a gnarled, wooden staff. A long, thin spear is planted upward in the ground by the cage. He is staring out, glassy-eyed, to the center of the glade where there is a goblin, hopping back and forth and clapping its hands in a makeshift camp. This plump green creature is boasting a nasty grin filled with mishapen yellowed fangs.
"Look what we found, look what we found! Gilbrug will be pleased. A delicious human." The goblin licks his lips. "And we found some . . . what is all this?" The goblin rummages through the sacks haphazzardly and holds a book up sideways. "What is?"
The man doesn't even move from his crumpled state. "Huh!? Tell me what this is or I'll put holes in you again!" To this, the man responds by quickly hopping straight up and cornering himself against the cell bars.
"I . . . I . . . You wouldn't understand. They're reagents. They're used for alchemical reactions and spells." The goblin pulls the spear out of the ground and jabs at his legs with a lustful grin.
"You speak no sense. Is food?" The golbin dips a finger into one of the bags, pulling out some grey dust and bringing it to its mouth. He frowns and spits it out, angrily. "Yaaaahh! This not food!" He picks up his spear again.

"Now if you wouldn't mind, please stand at each corner of the square." He gestures, toward the square.
Your party exchanges concerned glances, but do as he says and all align yourselves at the corners.

You ask the bishop, "You are a collector?"
"Why, yes, I most certainly am. One of the few accomplishments that I am truly proud of it. Many peculiarities and oddities, plus a menagerie of foreign species that I've procured, well, let's just say through some connections I have. There are the wiry, little Marunets from the arid region of Goltor, large voracious lupine Kixakuthes that truly make wonderful companions once they've been well disciplined and, of course, from the northern mount-"
(if: $compan is 1)[Karos lifts up a swift and firm fist, silencing the bishop. "We must remain quiet. Remember why we came out here. We heard loud stamping indicative of a large, fearsome beast. "There's no time for this. If you genuinely think this is a dragonling egg, then what do you suppose was the source of the shrieking we heard earlier? It certainly wasn't that which you hold. "Strike me then!" He snarls at them. "Do it, you filth! My flesh is open to your blades, just do it!" He bounds forward, as you unsheathe your sword and prepare to provide support. The surrounding crowd steps back.

[[Enter The City]]By the time the party enters the city gates, evening has begun. There is scant lighting provided by diffuse torches. Loren isn't getting anywhere and is beginning to become frustrated and flustered.
"Now, please settle down so we can talk about this!" The crowd doesn't adhere whatsoever and comes dangerously close to Loren. "Alright then, enough of this!"
Loren unsheathes her bow and fires a quick succession of arrows, each one skimming past their heads by just an inch, taking off some hairs with them. The crowd quiets down. "It seems you don't want to listen to negotiations. Well, let me propose this: if you want to keep your heads, you'll let us through. The crowd murmurs angrily but, after much consideration, finally let you all through. They go straight back to looting the stalls and fighting amongst themselves.

You and (if: $compan is 1)[Karos](else-if: $compan is 2)[Loren](else:)[error, No companion set] keep your eyes set on the shadows, looking for any sign of danger.
After about a hundred yards of walking on an upward slope of fine cobblestone, you find yourself at a tall pointed building. It has colorful stained glass and two statues at its front; one of a woman with a blindfold, standing straight up and looking down toward a book in her hands, and the other of a man striking an anvil, with a large hammer in one hand and the other in a sling.
The bishop immediately walks toward the entrance. Just before he enters, he looks back to you and stoically says, "Thank you for your assistance." He then enters the building and slams the large door behind you.

"Thank you." With a dispassionate handshake and a nod of approval, the Bishop quickly makes his way up a steep pathway of fine cobblestone. It isn't long before he dissapears into the crowd of finely dressed clergymen.

[[Journey Back To Collect Your Reward]]After a several day journey back, you and your companion arrive at your headquarters. Upon a desk in the center of the room are two sacks of coins. You both grab one of the sacks and exchange a few words before heading your own ways.
Congratulations on a successful mission.
[[Epilogue]]Weeks have passed since your previous mission in the Ashenbark Woods. You had some time between tasks and find yourself at a tavern. This tavern is called "The Leaky Barrel" and is located in a town just by Coreston.
You are sipping on a tall ale. You begin pondering your last mission and your line of work in general. (if: $karma is < -1)[Such a pittance given for such a perilous journey; easily tenfold was deserved. And you never seem to get enough coin to relax for any real stretch of time. Retirement is out of the picture. Will you always be stuck beneath this endless spiked wheel? You begin to feel resentment and rage build up inside. You look around at the others in the bar and think only of your pain and resent the looks of joy and laughter upon their faces. You think about all the people you hurt along the way to achieve success on your recent mission. Your guilt is nonexistent, and you actually feel some of your anger subside as your reminense about the pain you've dealt to others. You push away your ale, now discontent with even this simple pleasure.](else-if: $kamra is > 1)[Several lives were needlessly lost and just for a simple escort. There is a hope, though, that this was all worth it. You did manage to help a few people along the way. Though the bishop himself was perhaps not the most moral, his teachings certainly are. Maybe the clergy and commonfolk of Coreston will one day find some common ground. They are both striving to better themselves, are they not? At least you are able to help out in some sense, one client at a time, and make rigtheous choices along the way. Plus, the pay isn't so bad either. You enjoy a long sip of ale and end it with a smile.](else:)[An odd business this is. You have no control of who comes through the door and what task they present you with. And the infrequency of such means you often have to take them regardless of how you feel about it just to make ends meet. Your choices along the way are all in an attempt to please the client. It oftentimes feels like you have no control along the way; like a raft going through a downward stream, there is only so much influence you can have. Glassy-eyed, you stare at your ale for a moment, then drink the whole mug in a few quick gulps.]
[[Wander The Tavern]]You push back your chair and stand up. Stretching your legs, you begin to wander the the tavern. Paint is peeling from the walls and the humidity is relentless. A few scant torches leave the tavern relatively dim. The windows are dreary and foggy, disallowing you from looking out. The bar itself is well stocked, with several shelves of glasses and bottles lining the back wall. The barkeep is a rotund man with a filthy apron. He is cleaning a mug with an even filthier rag. Repeatedly, he holds the mug up to torchlight, assesses that it is still too dirty, and wipes it again with his rag. You flick him a coin to pay for your ale and he gives you a nod, then goes back to his fruitless task.
The tavern itself is relatively crowded. Nearly every seat is filled, from the bar to the tables. There is quite a clamor and you find it hard to even manuvear around. You decide to make your way back to your seat, but find that it has been taken by another patron. Upon further examination, you realize that you recognize (if: $compApproval is < -1)[(if: $compan is 1)[him as your previous companion Karos!
"Well, look who it is. Excuse me, but it seems you've taken my seat there, Karos." You place a hand on his shoulder.
He grabs your arm hard and quickly flips you onto your back, the wind being knocked out of your lungs. He then cowers right over you and brings his face right up to yours. You smell hard alcohol on his breath. He looks enraged, with lips pursed, as if he was about to scream.
His brow furrows and he titls his head. "It's you . . .", he says confusedly. He reluctantly presents a hand to help you back to your feet, though you deny it and scramble up of your own accord.
"What makes you think you can approach me like that after all we went through?" Karos is swaying slightly and is avoiding locking eyes with you. "You risk your life by encountering me as such."
"What do you mean, Karos?"
"You treated me poorly on our last mission; as if all that mattered was your objective and your compatriot was naught but a beast of burden. Despite my appearances and words of strength, I am but a man, you know, with all the vulnerabilities that come with it." You see his visage turn as tears start to well up. He hiccups.
"I . . . I'm sorry -"
Karos's slight tears boil into a firm anger. "You best find some other seat. And fast." He turns around and sits back down.](else-if: $compan is 2)[her as your previous companion Loren!
"Fancy seeing you here, Loren.", you say. "Though, it seems you've ended up in my seat there."
She turns around with a smile, likely to respond with some clever retort. When she recognizes you, her face sullies and she turns back around toward the bar, ignoring you.
You feel confused. You tap on her shoulder and say, "Hey, Loren. Is everything alright? It's me. Don't you remember our mission just a few weeks back?"
Loren swiftly turns around and frustratingly says, "Yes, I remember you. Not so fondly either. After how you treated me along our way, I don't see why you'd even approach me. I don't see why you wouldn't cower in shame when you recognized me, desperately trying to avoid my gaze."
She stands up and starts pointing a finger at you. The surrounding patrons quiet down some and look on. "I understand you have a job to do, trust me I know that well. That does not mean you have to disrespect and sacrifice the dignity of your campanion along the way just to get your mission accomplished. Knowing you, you likely didn't even recognize what you were putting me through." She turns back around and sits down.
"I . . . I'm sorry - "
With her back turned she says, "That's enough then. Our mission is done and we both received our pay. That means we have no more obligation to see each other. Now, go away." She flicks her hand back at you and returns to her drink.](else:)[Error, no companion set]](else-if: $compApproval is > 1)[(if: $compan is 1)[him as your previous companion Karos!
"Well, look what we've got here." You smile widely as Karos turns around. He notices you and shoots right up, banging against the table and shaking the glasses upon it.
"Captain!" You grab Karos's forearm and squeeze, as he does the same, and then bring yourself in for a hug. He grabs you with such strength that the air shoots out of your lungs. You smell hard alcohol on his breath.
After taking a moment to catch your breath, you say, "What in the world are you doing here, Karos?" You look around. "This doesn't seem like your scene."
He lets out an echoing laugh that nearly silences the whole tavern. "You're right there. I wouldn't normally be consuming toxins of any ilk. But, this is a special occasion . . . hic!" He slaps a man equally massive who is sat next to him hard on the back. The man laughs a bit and goes back to drinking his ale. Karos tells you, quite enthusiastically, "Once every hundred moons, we revere the gods of the north by seeking them from within. We spend the day getting as inebriated as we can. Then, we spend the twilight hours wandering and attempt to commune with them . . . hic!"
"Wow, how about that", you respond. "For most people here, this is just a regular night. They don't need such an excuse to cloud their judgement."
Karos laughs loudly again and leans upon you, while he slurredly says, "You've always been a funny man, Captain. I miss our time wandering those woods. What I'd give to see one of those ogres again . . ."
You and Karos exchange many jovial words with one another. This is a side of Karos you hadn't seen before. Within an hour he's drank eight more brews and you've narrowly managed to drink the few that he's been forcing upon you. You mention to him how well that last mission of yours went and propose he joins the "Rags of the Lotus" as a regular mercenary. Excited to see more of what fearsome creatures may be out there, he takes your information and plans to meet with you some time soon.](else-if: $compan is 2)[her as your previous companion Loren!
"Well, well back to our old thieving ways, I see." You place a light hand on her shoulder and she looks back toward you. "That was my seat, you know."
She recognizes you and her eyes shoot up. She flashes you her famous smile. "Fancy seeing you here, 'Cap!" She mentions something to the man sitting next to her and he shoots up and briskly heads right out of the tavern. She taps upon the empty stool. "Got a seat for you right here, if you'll take it. You must let me buy a drink!"
You smile and shrug, then sit down next to your old companion. "You know that man?"
"Oh heavens no. I just told him that there was a strict two drink limit here and that the tavern down the road has cheaper drinks."
"Is that so? What're we doing here then?", you begin to stand up out of your chair.
"'Course not!" She sets a hand on you to stop. "You still haven't learned my ways yet, 'Cap, have ya'? Anyway, what brings you out to this neck of the woods?"
"I just had some rare time off and thought I'd try to relax a bit. I could ask you the same question, couldn't I?"
"What else do you think I do with my days? You expect to see me in a church or a library? No, this is where I do my research. I observe the clientele, learn about rumors of what's happening in the surrounding areas, and listen to any valuable gossip that could be used to my advantage. Sometimes, I even leave with a heavier coinpurse than when I've come in." She winks.
You both laugh heartily.
You and Loren exchange pleasant words for well over an hour as well as a few cups of ale. By the end of the exchange you propose that she join the "Rags of the Lotus" as a regular mercenary. She says that she'd be willing to consider it, finding that her current line of work has been, as she says, "inconsistent", and you leave her with your information.](else:)[Error, no companion set]](else:)[(if: $compan is 1)[him as your previous companion Karos!
"Hello there, Karos. How are you doing?"
"Hmm . . . ?" He turns around and notices you. "Oh it's you. I'm doing alright." He returns to his drink, turning back around.
"Would you mind if I sat with you?"
He takes a moment, seeming uncertain if he'd really like to or not. "Go ahead then." He gestures to the seat next to you. He seems quite inebriated.
"What are you doing in these parts? I didn't think you drank," you say, as you sit down next time.
"Aye, it's true." He barely makes eye contact with you, seeming disinterested. "It's a special occasion. A tribal ritual, if you will."
"Always a man of tradition, Karos. Well it's pleasant to see you here regardless."
He nods stoically and you both go back to drinking.

She turns around. "Well, well. Hello. I'm doing well, yourself?"
"Not too bad then. Would you mind if I sat with you?"
She shrugs and then gestures to the seat next to her.
You settle down. It takes you a few moments to think of anything to say. "This tavern's pretty packed. Do you frequent this tavern often?", you ask her.
"It's alright, yeah. It serves its purpose. Plenty of patrons to glean information from." She takes a sip and holds up her cup. "Ale's only slightly watered down, too."
You laugh politely and smile at her. "Either way, I'm glad I came in and stumbled upon you." She smiles politely at you and nods.
You exchange some pleasanties over the next couple of minutes. It's nice to have found a recognizable soul in here. It's better than having to drink on your own.](else:)[Error, no companion set]]
You make your way to the exit of the tavern.
[[Prepare To Leave]]You open the heavy front door to the bar and reveal the exterior. The night is relatively brisk. Quite a few people are hanging around the outside of the tavern, lit up by a couple torches. Some are leaning against the stone building and others are sat cross-legged upon the ground, unable to maintain their balance any longer. A few are retching out what they just paid to enjoy.
You are preparing to make your way to the stables, find your steed, and head home. As you look around, you notice none other than the Bishop Rafferty outside! Though clergy are typically not allowed to drink, he seems already drunk and is in common clothes. He is talking to a woman dressed in very little clothing who seems to be getting progressively angry with him.
(if: $bishopApproval is < -2)["Bishop! It's me!" You attempt to wave him down. When the woman he is speaking with hears you, she slaps him across the face.
"Don't call me that here!" You see a look of rancor upon his face as he watches her stomp away. He turns back to you and points a finger in your face, furiously declaring, "I was so close! And your ruined my chances. God forsake you. Why in God's name would you think I'd like to speak with you? Be off!"
"I'm sorry, Rafferty."
He scoffs. "Yes well you best be. I'm surprised you even received your payment after how little credence you gave me on that last mission. I certainly didn't speak very highly of your little troupe to my superiors."
Bishop Rafferty walks away from you. You shake your head, then make your way back down the nearby road.](else-if: $bishopApproval is > 2)["Rafferty!" You attempt to wave him down. He is distracted with the woman he is speaking with.
"Come here, little lady." He attempts to grab her around the waist to which the woman responds by punching him in the gut and stomping away. He then notces you and smiles, still hunched over from the blow. He slurridly says, "What a surprise to see you here." He then stands up straight as he watches the woman stomp way. "She was wretched to begin with. Not worth my time."
"I'm just as surprised to see you here. I thought the clergy weren't allowed to partake in such."
"Aye, the clergy sure aren't. Luckily, there's no reason anyone would think I am part of them." He laughs lightly. You hadn't seen this sort of joy out of the bishop for the duration of your previous mission.
He convinces you to come back inside with him for a drink. After a few more, it seems his tongue is completely loose. He tells you several stories of corruption within the clergy. He speaks of using his status to attain power and lord it over others. After some interesting exchanges, you finally start to make your way out of the tavern and head back down the nearby road.](else:)[You attempt to wave him down. "Rafferty!," you exclaim.
He drags the woman further away from you and continues talking with her, not responding at all to your call. You approach and tap his shoulder. "Hey, Rafferty. It's me!" At this point, the woman walks away from him.
He turns back to you, frustrated. "Do I know you? And even if I did, what makes you want to interrupt me so?"
"I'm sorry, I just recognized you from our previous mission in the Ashenbark Woods."
"What now?", he responds, seeming genuinely confused and increasingly angry.
"The escort mission. You were tied up by ogres and the clergy hired us to . . ."
"I'll stop you there. I have no ties to the clergy and certainly don't have the faintest idea of what you mean. Now, please, leave me be!" He quickly walks back toward the woman, waving and calling toward her.
You look around, feeling isolated and a tad confused. You suppose this is what you've come to expect from the Bishop and shouldn't have expected any different. You kick up some dirt and finally make your way back down the nearby road.]
You find the stables and your steed. You provide him a carrot and pet his large mane. He neighs loudly. Your bring his face up to yours and rest your forehead on his for a moment. Then, you mount the steed and make your way off into the deep, cold night.
